A Kiss from Rose | So You Want People to Accept You “As Is”

This conversation might get a little uncomfortable.

Everybody loves to say, “People just need to accept me for who I am!”

Okayyyyy… but do YOU accept people for who they are?

Because somehow we want grace for our personality, patience for our moods, understanding for our shortcomings, room for our mistakes, and forgiveness when we get it wrong…

But somebody else has one little quirk we don’t like and suddenly we’re holding an emergency board meeting about their entire character.

Make it make sense.

You want people to understand that you’re “just straightforward,” but when somebody else is straightforward with you, now they’re rude.

You want people to respect that you need space, but when somebody else needs space, suddenly they’re acting funny.

You want grace when you forget to call, but when they don’t call, you’re questioning the whole friendship.

You want people to accept your imperfections while quietly keeping a performance review on everybody else’s.

Ok, HR has entered the chat.

Scripture gives us something to think about:

“And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” — Luke 6:31 (KJV)

Now, accepting someone for who they are does not mean accepting disrespect, abuse, dishonesty, manipulation, or behavior that continuously harms you. You can accept the truth about who someone is and decide they don’t belong close to you.

But sometimes the problem isn’t toxicity.

Sometimes they’re simply different from you.

Different communication style. Different personality. Different interests. Different way of showing love. Different pace. Different strengths. Different weaknesses.

And different doesn’t automatically mean wrong.

💌 Grandma’s Corner

Before you complain about how somebody treats you, occasionally turn that mirror around and ask:

“Would I enjoy receiving the version of me that I keep giving everybody else?”

Whew.

Because if you want patience, practice patience.

If you want consideration, be considerate.

If you want people to overlook your occasional mess, stop pulling out a magnifying glass for theirs.

If you want room to be human, give somebody else some room to be human too.

We are all works in progress trying to love other works in progress.

So yes, be yourself.

Just remember everybody else is trying to be themselves too.

And if you’re asking the whole world to accept your “that’s just how I am” package…

you might want to make sure you’re not returning everybody else’s package to sender.

Give the grace you keep asking to receive.
