A pretender is someone who presents a false version of themselves, often with hidden motives that can be harmful. This deception can manifest in different areas of life—someone may pretend to love you, act as though they’re part of your family, or falsely claim to want to help you. Such people can cause emotional pain, betray trust, and lead to confusion, especially when their true intentions are revealed.
The Bible warns us about the dangers of these individuals. In Matthew 7:15, Jesus cautions, “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” This verse reminds us to be discerning and vigilant, as not everyone who appears to have good intentions is genuine.
Furthermore, Proverbs 26:24-26 speaks to the deception of a pretender: “Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart; though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.” This shows that no matter how long someone hides their true nature, God will reveal their intentions in due time.
God is a protector for those who are deceived. Psalm 91:14-15 declares, “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.” God promises to stand by us, to expose those who seek to harm us through deceit, and to restore us.
In times of confusion or betrayal by pretenders, take comfort in knowing that God sees all, and He will guide you to truth, heal your heart, and protect you from harm. Keep faith in His justice, as He will expose deception and lead you to those who truly have your best interests at heart.
