The story of the borrowed ax head in 2 Kings 6:1-7 is a powerful reminder of God’s care and provision, even in the smallest details of our lives. In this passage, the sons of the prophets were cutting down trees by the Jordan River to build a larger place to live. While one of them was chopping wood, the ax head flew off and fell into the water. Distressed, the man cried out to Elisha because the ax was borrowed.
Elisha responded with calm faith, asking where it fell. He threw a stick into the water, and miraculously, the iron ax head floated to the surface.
This story teaches us that no matter how insignificant our needs may seem, God is concerned about every detail. The ax head was borrowed, symbolizing responsibility and accountability, and its loss could have brought shame or financial burden. Yet, through faith and obedience, a solution was provided.
Let this story encourage you today: God is in the business of restoring what is lost. Whether it’s a relationship, an opportunity, or a resource, He can make what seems impossible—like iron floating—possible. Trust Him to meet your needs, big or small, and know that He cares deeply about the things that matter to you. Just as the prophet acted with faith by retrieving the ax, step out with faith in your situation, knowing that God’s power and provision are always within reach.
There are so many stories that are not shared as often as others, however that doesn’t mean there aren’t inspiring stories out there. How many times have you heard this story spoken of in your church? Yet, here it is! Talking about how a person’s worry about a lost object turned into a miracle and showed the faith those around him had.
