A Kiss from Rose | The Grandmother of Jesus and King David

The Bible and Christian tradition offer us glimpses of remarkable women who played pivotal roles in shaping the lineage and story of redemption. Two such women are Ruth, the grandmother of King David, and Saint Anne, traditionally recognized as the grandmother of Jesus.

Ruth is celebrated in the Bible for her unwavering loyalty and faith. A Moabite woman by birth, Ruth chose to stay by her mother-in-law Naomi’s side after the loss of her husband, declaring her devotion to Naomi, her people, and her God. This bold decision led her to Bethlehem, where she met and married Boaz, a kind and God-fearing man. Ruth became the mother of Obed, the grandfather of King David. Her story, recorded in the Book of Ruth, is one of love, faith, and redemption. Ruth’s life exemplifies how God’s grace can work through unexpected people to fulfill His divine plan, as she became an ancestor of both King David and Jesus Christ.

Saint Anne, while not mentioned in the Bible, is venerated in Christian tradition as the mother of Mary and the grandmother of Jesus. Her story is derived from early Christian writings, such as the Protoevangelium of James, which describe Anne and her husband Joachim as a devout couple who prayed fervently for a child. In their old age, their prayers were answered, and Anne gave birth to Mary, who was chosen by God to be the mother of the Savior. As the grandmother of Jesus, Saint Anne represents a legacy of faith and devotion that paved the way for God’s plan of salvation through Christ.

Both Ruth and Saint Anne remind us of the profound impact of women of faith across generations. Ruth’s trust in God amidst hardship and Saint Anne’s dedication to raising a daughter in godliness are testaments to the roles they played in the divine narrative. Their lives inspire us to embrace faith, love, and obedience to God, knowing that He works through the lives of ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes.
