Emotions are real, and they matter—but they should never have the final say. When we allow our feelings to rule us, we often create distance, confusion, and division—especially in our relationships. Silence becomes the substitute for healing, and pride replaces peace.
But the Bible gives us a better way. In Luke 15:11–32, Jesus tells the parable of the Prodigal Son. While the spotlight is usually on the younger son who left and returned, there’s a powerful lesson in the response of the older brother. When his brother came home and was welcomed with open arms, the older son got in his feelings—hurt, jealous, angry. But instead of joining the celebration, he stayed outside. He didn’t talk to his brother. He didn’t rejoice. He was too caught up in how he felt to engage in what was happening.
It took the father coming out and having a conversation for the truth to surface. The father didn’t ignore the older son’s feelings—but he didn’t let them go unaddressed either. He initiated the conversation. That’s the model: don’t stay stuck outside. Don’t sit in your emotions so long that you miss your moment.
There’s grace in talking things through. There’s clarity in communication. The conversation you’re avoiding might just be the key to healing a relationship, restoring peace, or even receiving something you didn’t realize you needed.
So today, get out of your feelings and have the conversation. Speak in truth, listen in love, and let God lead the outcome.
“Some people are worth the conversation, well, everyone should be.” - Alston Shropshire
